So we are continuing our travel  “Around the World in 12 Dishes” and we have arrived in Kenya.

Kenya!

Kenya?

I must admit we didn`t know much about this beautiful African country and it was very exciting to start exploring. Our first step was- FOOD! Just look at these names- Uppama,  Mbaazi, Khitsherie, Muthya , Pakoras,  Sukuma Wiki, Mandazi. Don`t they sound interesting! And don`t you just feel you want to try out some of these recipes!

Well I planned just to close my eyes and  pick one, but then I thought to check the ingredients to make sure our lil one would also eat it. Well she did kind of- I just had to leave out the spices :)

So our food is Dry Potato and Pea Sak

(Makes 2 servings)

Hmm.. I must admit it sounded very much like  our fried potatoes, so I thought to have a go.

All you need is:

2 boiled potatoes, cut into bite size pieces
1/2 cup boiled peas
1 tsp cumin seeds
3 Tbsp oil
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 onion, chopped
1 hot pepper, chopped (optional)
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 piece ginger, chopped
1 tomato, chopped
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp salt

And this is what you do:

Heat oil. Add cumin seeds and turmeric. When the seeds begin to pop add onions, garlic, and ginger. Cook  for a few minutes. Add the tomato and cook for a few more minutes.

Sprinkle salt and cayenne on the potatoes. Add the potatoes and peas to the oil, spice, and onion mixture. Stir until the potatoes are coated with oil and are yellow. Heat everything well.

Sak means a spiced vegetable dish.

On the first pic you can see lil mermaid helping me chop the veggies. On the second pic there is my food- proper Dry Potato and Pea Sak and on the third pic there is lil mermaid`s version- just fried potatos with onions and peas :)

This was only the first step in exploring Kenya. We will try and get some books about the country and do some craft as well!
