Winter Birds
I owe this tutorial to my lovely blog friend Pam from Gingerbread Snowflakes. I promised her I would make it a loooooooooooong time ago. But here it is.
Last year I made only Blue Tits and Bullfinches (Do they look like them?)
But this year I thought I would just make colourful winter birds. It is not my idea. I have made them ever since I was a child. I don’t even remember who taught me. And I only made them for Christmas.
This is a template of a bird. Trace it onto coloured card and cut it out.
To make the pom pom cut out two rings. Put (hold) them together and start feeding the yarn around them.
Add another lovely colour of yarn. And then one more.
Now it’s time to cut the pom pom and seal it with yarn. I took a double one to make sure it wouldn’t break when I made a knot. Push the scissors between the two cardboard rings and cut carefully.
When you have finished cutting the pom pom apart just tie the knot.
Now it`s time to put the pom pom inside the bird.
Push the pom pom carefully inside the bird.
Now it is time to remove the two cardboard rings.
Cut off the two pieces of yarn you used for tieing the pom pom… leave the two middle ones. You can use them for hanging the bird up. If you want to make a bird to put on the table, them cut off all four pieces of yarn. But then the pom pom should be bigger… so the bird wont fall over.
Trim the pom pom. Add the eyes and a piece of coloured card for the beak if you wish. And the bird is ready!

Dear Linda, I love birds–and so does my 6 yr. old–and we really REALLY love yours!!! We tried them, but I am having a little trouble at the tying part. Where did the long pieces of yarn that you used to tie up and secure the pompom come from? It looks like they are between the 2 cardboard rings?? Your photos are very clear but I cannot figure out how those very handy 4 pieces of yarn that you used, first to cut off 2, then to hang up with the remaining 2, came from. (Help!) We would like to make a whole family of your cute birds, maybe even to put them on a mobile, for the holidays. Thank you so much and happy holidays to you and your family. -Naomi

I only needed one long piece of yarn, but to make it stronger I folded it in half. Then I tied the pom pom up and put it through the bird shape. As I had folded the yarn in half, that meant that two long pieces of yarn were on one side of the bird and two on the other side. After removing the cardboard rings, I just cut off two of the pieces of yarn and then hung the bird up with the other two pieces.
It was just the one piece of yarn that I needed though – folding it and putting the pom pom through the bird shape, just gave me four pieces that I could use. Hope that helps.

My whole Xmas tree is covered in birds and I’m always on the lookout for new ornaments to make…this is the first I have seen using pom poms though…LOVE IT!
